Frankfort was a short 2-day stop on en route to Virginia to visit Buffalo Trace distillery and help break up the drive.

On Friday, we both had a day of work at the hotel, but walked around town to explore the city in the evening and found a cute mostly-outdoor brewery down the street called Sig Luscher, specializing in pilsners and lagers, but “no IPAs or anything hoppy” the bartender warned us (Don must have been looking extra Hipster-y). A local at the bar also recommended their whiskey slushy, which I was happy to try!

On Saturday morning we visited Buffalo Trace without a reservation, but were lucky to snag a tasting spot from a last-minute cancellation. While waiting for our time slot we walked around the distillery grounds to see their branded water tower, rickhouses, bottling building, and their 7 millionth barrel on display in the world’s tiniest rickhouse, meant only to hold one barrel. While eavesdropping on someone else’s tour, we learned that Buffalo Trace donates bottles from every millionth barrel to raise money for different charities.

Our tasting guide gave us the history of the distillery and was surprisingly educational. Don’s favorite sample was EH Taylor and mine was the bourbon cream (specifically mixing it with a sample of root beer to make a boozy “root beer float”)

Later in the day we met up with my cousin Zac, who lives in Lexington. He met us in Frankfort for dinner, ice cream, and a walk around town. We haven’t seen Zac in a few years and we were so grateful to be in town to catch up!
